Commentary on the Gospel of St. Mark - Barbieri

The Commentary on the Gospel of St. Mark by Bartolomeo de Barbieri, OFM Cap. (18th Century), is a practical-mystical Exposition on each Chapter of the Gospel of St. Mark according to the mind and writings of the Seraphic Doctor, St. Bonaventure.

Though many commentaries on Scripture today abound with intricate analyses of the literal, linguistic, and historical sense of the Scriptures, Barbieri on the other hand, a profound Theologian and a veteran of Scholastic Speculation in the Bonaventurian-Scotist Tradition of the Franciscan Order, sets out in his commentaries to instead provide his reader with immediate subject matter for Meditation, Conversion, Penance, and Prayer, the principal purposes of the Gospel Message.

Faithful to the Mystical bent of the Seraphic Doctor, Barbieri seeks to draw the reader into Prayer, moreso than into bare, sterile historical knowledge. In this, he helps his readers draw out the proper fruits of the reading and study of Scripture, namely: Charity, and the amendment of one's life for the Love and Glory of God.

The Edition is the first in our upcoming series of translations of Barbieri's Commentaries on Scripture, which will include all four Gospels, the Catholic Epistles of the New Testament, and the Apocalypse of St. John.
