This Calendar comes as a response to the reality that some today find certain expressions concerning the Blessed Virgin’s Role in Salvation offensive, or at the very least, “inappropriate” and “unhelpful”; in particular, the titles of “Co-Redemptrix”, and “Mediatrix”, and of course, other equivalent titles or expressions.
The sense of reserve or suspicion raised against these titles has undoubtedly disturbed and, at the very least, confused many Catholics. For it is no secret, even to the harshest critics, that from the age of the Apostles and their immediate successors, the Faithful have always been instructed to believe that Mary is without a doubt the closest and most intimate cooperator in the work of Salvation, and to illustrate this truth of Faith, the terms in question have unanimously been made use of. Moreover, as the fruit of the teaching Church, within the tradition of the praying Church, both in the official Liturgy of East and West, as well as in the intimate devotion of the ordinary faithful, these titles have been held as dear as the Faith itself, as most fruitful wellsprings of Catholic devotion, and the most firm bases of our Marian Piety.
In witness to this, the 19th-20th Centuries saw the most fervent appeals to the Holy See for the definition of a Dogma that we’ve likely ever seen in Church History in the Vox Populi Movement, spearheaded by such eminent figures as Cardinal Mercier of Belgium, Fr. Charles Balic OFM, Fr. Garrigou Lagrange OP, St. Maximilian Kolbe, and many others, including multiple International Theological Commissions exploring its defineability; not to mention millions of Catholic Faithful across the world. This movement is in fact directly responsible for the inclusion of Chapter VIII of the Second Vatican Council’s Lumen Gentium, which expressly teaches this Catholic doctrine.
All this being the case, this calendar seeks to present the universal teaching of the Church as found in the writings of the most eminent Fathers and Doctors of the Church as a most firm defense for these titles and for the doctrinal truths which are contained in them, demonstrating that throughout the entirety of our Catholic History, the title and the teaching are one and the same and therefore inseparable.
In doing so, we affirm together with St. Vincent of Lerins that, if it were so, namely that these “controversial” expressions and titles were repugnant, inappropriate, unhelpful, and opposed to sound Theology and the instruction of the Faithful, that:
“it would be necessary thus also to affirm that all the faithful of all ages, all the Saints, all the chaste, the continent, the virgins, all clerics, deacons, and priests, so many thousands of confessors, such vast armies of martyrs, so many cities, so many peoples and multitudes, so many islands, provinces, kings, nations, realms—finally almost the whole world incorporated through the Catholic faith to Christ the head—should be pronounced to have, through so many centuries, been ignorant, erred, blasphemed, and not known what they believed.”
(St. Vincent of Lerins, Commonitorium c. 33)
